I love onion and I found an interesting way to add some grilled onion slices to these hamburgers. The result is amazing, the beef cooks with the onion juices making it as tasty as it can be and the best part, it looks huge without adding much calories or fat! These hamburgers are truly special.
MEXICAN STYLE HAMBURGERS
Hamburgers are a summer barbecue classic. Everyone loves a juicy burger with all the fixings. The downside is that hamburgers are not always healthy. Many burgers are high in fat and calories. This recipe is great because it uses the leanest ground beef and lots of vegetables. All of this goodness on a whole-wheat bun make for the perfect low-fat healthy burger that everyone will love.
This hamburger is good for those of you who need to weigh your food. The burger has a beef patty that is the size of two, but with way less meat so you can portion exactly what you need without going over your limit. The great thing is that the patty is so thick and juicy you will feel like you are having a gourmet restaurant hamburger. My secret is placing a thick slice of onion in the center of the patty and forming the meat around it. This helps form a perfectly round patty that is thick and hearty. The patty will cook up great getting extra flavor from all the onion juices inside. It is so delicious.
Another great addition to the meat is the shredded carrot. This adds an extra dose of beta-carotene fiber and vitamin C found in carrots. There are also ingredients such as garlic, oregano and mustard in the mix. These are good immune boosters and antioxidants. Even if your kids like their hamburger plain, they will be eating a serving of vegetables as well as other nutrients in the meat alone!
Lean beef, melty cheese and tons of veggies make this hamburger an absolute delight. HAMBURGERS – MEXICAN STYLE
1 pound of lean ground beef
1 cup of shredded carrots
1 tbsp of chopped cilantro
1 garlic clove
1 tbsp of oregano
1 tbsp of yellow mustard
1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp of soy sauce
- Mix the meat, egg, carrots, cilantro, garlic, oregano, and mustard
- Spread the meat in a circular shape to form a patty
- Place a thick slice of onion in the middle of the patty
- Pour the Worcestershire and soy sauces on the onion
- Wrap the meat around the onion forming a patty
- Cook the patties for about 6-7 minutes on each side
- Place patties on whole-wheat buns with mayo, mustard and ketchup
- Add vegetables like fresh onion, spinach, tomato and jalapeño to complete your burger
