What is Gravy?

Gravy is a delicious sauce of British origin that is commonly used to enhance the flavor of roasted meats, such as turkey. This sauce is made from a mixture of butter, flour and liquid (usually meat or poultry stock) that is cooked until it thickens and acquires a rich, aromatic flavor.

Gravy perfectly complements traditional holiday dishes such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as other traditional dishes, adding an irresistible layer of flavor to your meals. Its versatility and unique flavor make gravy an essential element in the kitchen to give a special touch to your favorite family holiday meals.

Gravy with Mushrooms?

If you want to add a special touch to your gravy, consider adding mushrooms. Simply sauté chopped mushrooms in a little butter until golden brown and then add them to the gravy before serving. This will give it an even more delicious flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons all purpouse flour
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 cloves
  • 2 cups of beef or chicken broth or the juice left over from the turkey after baking

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: In a skillet over low heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. The melted butter will add a touch of richness and smoothness to your gravy.

Step 2: Add the 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour to the melted butter. Mix quickly to ensure that the flour is integrated without forming lumps. If lumps appear, simply disassemble them while stirring the mixture.

Step 3: Once the butter and flour are well mixed, stir in 2 cups of bouillon (you can use chicken, turkey, or beef bouillon). I always make it with the juices that come out of the turkey after baking it. This will infuse your gravy with a delicious flavor.

Step 4: Add 2 tablespoons of brown sugar and 3 cloves. The brown sugar will add a touch of sweetness and the cloves an aromatic flavor.

Step 5: Bring the mixture to a boil and cook for about 4 minutes. As the gravy cools, it will thicken, so don’t worry if it seems liquid at first.

Tips for Thickening Gravy:

If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can add more flour. However, avoid adding it directly to the hot mixture, as it may form lumps. Instead, dilute the flour in a little room temperature water until there are no lumps and then quickly mix it with the rest of the gravy.
